Florida’s First Hypercoaster Coming to Orlando
What is TALLER than Orlando’s TALLEST roller coaster Universal’s Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit which towers at 167 feet? What is FASTER than Orlando’s FASTEST coaster the Incredible Hulk which tops speeds of 67 mph? And, what is LONGER than Orlando’s LONGEST coaster Disney’s Expedition Everest which spans 4,427 feet for a 4 minute ride? One word: MAKO, the new roller coaster at SeaWorld Orlando.
Get ready to experience Orlando’s newest TALLEST, FASTEST AND LONGEST rollercoaster Mako at SeaWorld® Orlando! The groundwork for the new roller coaster at SeaWorld Orlando has already begun along I-Drive with an expected opening in Summer 2016. Named after the ocean’s fastest and most agile shark, the Mako roller coaster is modeled after this creature. “On Mako, you’ll experience what it’s like to be this apex predator, surging through the water at top speed and chasing prey throughout a massive reef,” said Brian Morrow, SeaWorld’s attraction creative director. “It will be a wild mix of fear, thrills”.
Just like the fastest shark in the sea, riders can expect speeds topping out at 73mph! Based on the Mako’s ability to make tremendous leaps and change direction quickly to pursue their prey, the coaster will have 9 air time hills (creating the feeling of weightlessness) with steep drops including one of 200 feet and several sharp turns! And, like sharks who are at the top of their food chain, this coaster will be at the top of its class standing at 200 feet–surpassing Orlando’s tallest coaster by 33 feet.
Mako Roller Coaster Details
In three minutes, the Mako coaster will dart along nearly a mile long (4,760 feet) steel track surpassing Orlando’s longest coaster by 333 feet. The ride will not go upside down. However, the shark themed ride will appropriately take place mostly over or alongside the water of SeaWorld’s central lake. Riders will be treated to a soundtrack that SeaWorld created just for this ride while they wait in the station and are aboard the train. There will be 28 riders per train in rows of four. There will be lap restraints to ensure riders feel full weightlessness. At night, park goers will experience light effects which will give riders the illusion that the Mako is on the hunt and chasing its prey. And, adrenaline junkies might be excited to learn that the Mako will be Orlando’s first ever ‘ hypercoaster’- a small class of coasters known for high speeds, steep drops, and hills that create air time. Mako the new rollercoaster at SeaWorld Orlando promises to be one wild ride!
The Mako coaster will be the Park’s newest roller coaster since Manta opened in 2009. SeaWorld hopes that a huge upgrade like this will detract some of the negative attention they have received over the last few years and change public perception. The thrill ride will be part of a larger themed shark area which will include the pre-existing Shark Encounter and Sharks Under Water Grill. SeaWorld is also keen to host educational programs where guests can learn about sharks including human impact, environment, and verge of extinction. Additionally, new shops, a shipwrecked- themed experience called Sharks Realm , which will make patrons feel like they have been transported to an underwater world of sharks, will also be added.
