The Disney Company released its first quarter earnings for 2012 on February 7th, 2012. Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, walked through the earnings report which indicated that the domestic theme parks played a starring role in the company’s overall business performance. Although revenue for the entire company was only up 1%, Disney parks revenues did increase 10%.
Additional notes from the earnings call that might interest our readers:
- Disney park attendance for 2012 was up 3% for the quarter
- Per person guest spending was up 8%. This was prompted by higher ticket pricing and food and beverage spending in the parks during the first quarter
- Mr. Iger indicated that initial reservations and hotel rates at Disney are up in 2012 in the area of 5-6% at the time of the call
- The Hong Kong Disneyland park substantially outperformed Disneyland® Paris for the quarter in the international parks segment
Most analysts who follow Disney indicate that the company will continue to de-emphasize the Disney parks promotions deal discounting strategy as the economy continues to improve. This may result in higher rates paid by the average consumer. The company has also announced recent 2012-13 capital outlays to renovate some of the older Orlando park attractions. This includes:
- Fantasyland Expansion including Under the Sea, Journey of the Little Mermaid, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Princess Fairytale Hall and other enhancements
- Thunder Mountain Mountain Renovation
- All of these changes are being billed as the largest since the park opened
